Set within the old Science Library of Owens College, Christie’s Bistro exudes all the elegance and atmosphere of the fantastic building in which it is housed. Now part of the University of Manchester, the imposing Neo-Gothic Christie Building in which the bistro is situated boasts history and splendour with its oak panelling and walls of old books, allowing you to enjoy a meal in some of the most impressive, cultured and convivial surroundings in Manchester.
Christie’s is popular with University staff but is open to everyone and is a great way to experience the splendid gothic surroundings of the University whilst enjoying superb food and hospitality.
The Bistro is based within the Old Christie Library that formed part of Owens College. Built in 1890 as the new Study of Education, the Christies Library was a gift from the former law professor, historian and bibliophile Richard Copley Christie. For much of the twentieth century it housed the University’s principle science library.
One hundred years later, and after the building of the University main library building, The John Ryland’s Library, the Christie Science Library was converted into a restaurant with leather chairs, old bookcases containing some of the original science reference books and periodicals, and portraits of previous Vice Chancellors hanging from the walls. The combined effect of all this helped to generate a breath taking room, steeped in university history that helps to impress any visitors or guests that may pass through.
